Water Tower Place has been in successful business since 1976, it was very popular with public, now the mall faces big uncertainties and significant challenges in its future business. Those were very good and memorable experiences. However, I did visit American Girl Place - the store works just fine, but wasn't too busy, then I had a very nice lunch at Harry Caray's 7th Inning restaurant, and also visited a modern Sports Museum near the restaurant. The glass elevator in the center of the atrium now goes from the Mezzanine (Level M) up to the top Level 7, with no stops in between. I visited the mall at the end of July - and was somewhat saddened by what I saw. Some old stores are still there (Adidas, Lacoste, Aeropostale, Express, Eileen Fisher, Pink, Victoria's Secret, Lego, and others), some new ones open their doors to customers, pop-ups are emerging - food stands, kiosks, etc. Once a vibrant, always busy, always attractive and famous mall on N Michigan Avenue looks. Not only Macy's gone by now - dozens of other shops, restaurants, cafes, etc are no longer in Water Tower Place. The mall is there - the looks are different. It's not easy to evaluate Water Tower Place now, since the flagship store Macy's closed their business in the mall in Spring 2021. I could well imagine one spending several hours in Water Tower Place, and especially so, if they enjoy shopping. Besides the retail, there are dining options, as well, though I only was shopping, and for specific items, on this visit. With my wife’s makeup in hand, I was off to survey the Water Tower Place namesake buildings - one on either side of Michigan Ave.Įven if the weather had been great outside, Water Tower Place would still be a great indoor space to spend a few hours. Water Tower Place is a large shopping center, built close to the original Water Tower, which is probably the oldest building in downtown Chicago, and which holds historic significance due to the devastating Chicago Fire. On this day (really was in no urgent need to go back outside in the weather), I took the time to study this water feature - intriguing, for certain, and maybe I was able to pick up a few ideas for one of our water features back home, due for a remodel? Maybe I had been focused on going to a specific store in Water Tower Place, or just not looked in the right direction. One of the things, which I saw (how could I have missed this before?) was a stepped water feature, between the escalators, with interesting “tubes” of water between each level. While my wife was in meetings, I was tasked with picking up some makeup for her, and she knew that Macy’s carried this particular brand, so off to Water Tower Place I headed. On this visit, the weather was gloomy, cool, overcast with sporadic rain. "Target has a great reputation as a company it's got a very strong balance sheet it's earnings were strong in 2020 and we would look forward to welcoming them or another similarly strong store in that space," Magnificent Mile Association President Kimberly Bares said earlier this year.We were back in Chicago in September, and once more staying at the Westin on Michigan Ave, just a block, or so, from the Water Tower Place shopping center, 835 N Michigan Ave on the Magnificent Mile, and anchored by a Macy’s. Target was reportedly eyeing the latter vacancy for a time, but no replacements have been confirmed.
